Thank you so much for joining us, Dave! Our readers would love to get to know you a bit better. Can you tell us a bit about your backstory?
Thank you, Stacey! I’ve been involved in martial arts for over four decades, which has profoundly shaped my understanding of health and well-being. Throughout my career, I’ve always valued martial arts for the discipline, strength, and resilience it builds. However, as I entered my late 30s and early 40s, I noticed changes in my body — shifts in energy, flexibility, and even my mood — that martial arts alone didn’t seem to fully address anymore. That’s when I realized there was a gap in health support specifically tailored to middle-aged men. It inspired me to create a program that blends martial arts principles with modern strategies for improving health, focusing on the unique needs of men during this phase of life.
What makes your martial arts program unique?
This program is one of the few that’s specifically designed for middle-aged men. Most martial arts programs are either tailored for younger individuals seeking physical strength or for seniors who need low-impact exercise. There wasn’t much available for those of us in between — men in their late 30s to 50s, who are dealing with issues like declining muscle mass, hormonal changes, and increased stress levels. My program blends ancient martial arts techniques with modern health science to target these specific challenges. It’s not just about physical training — it’s a holistic program designed to improve mental clarity, resilience, and overall well-being.
Why do you think many people fail at sustaining New Year’s health resolutions?
People often fail because they set themselves up for short-term bursts rather than sustainable change. They jump into extreme diets or intense workout routines without considering how deeply ingrained their current habits are. It takes at least six to seven weeks to establish new habits, yet many give up after just a couple of weeks because they don’t see immediate results. Another issue is failing to identify and address personal triggers — things like stress or social pressures that lead them back to old behaviors. My approach focuses on gradual, manageable changes and emphasizes consistency over perfection, which helps people build lasting habits.
Can you elaborate on the hormonal changes men face in midlife?
As men reach their late 30s and beyond, they experience a natural decline in testosterone, which can lead to reduced muscle mass, lower energy levels, and mood swings. At the same time, stress levels often increase, elevating cortisol, the hormone responsible for the body’s “fight or flight” response. This combination can negatively affect sleep, increase fat storage (particularly around the midsection), and make it harder to maintain muscle. My program addresses these changes by incorporating strength training, cardiovascular exercise, and mindfulness practices that help regulate hormones, reduce stress, and boost overall health.
How does martial arts improve overall health?
Martial arts go beyond physical fitness; they promote mental and emotional well-being too. Physically, they improve cardiovascular health, increase flexibility, enhance muscular strength, and build self-awareness. Mentally, they build discipline, focus, and resilience. The breathing techniques practiced in martial arts are also excellent for reducing stress and improving lung capacity. Even light martial arts exercises can help manage chronic conditions and reduce the likelihood of illness. I’ve found that the consistency and structure martial arts offer make them an excellent tool for long-term health improvement.
What role does consistency play in maintaining health during midlife?
Consistency is the foundation of health improvement. Many people approach health with an all-or-nothing mindset, but it’s the small, consistent actions — like daily stretching, mindful breathing, or short exercise routines — that lead to lasting change. You don’t have to overhaul your entire life overnight. By focusing on steady progress and sticking to a routine, you build momentum, which eventually leads to significant results. In my experience, clients who commit to consistent, manageable habits see the greatest transformations over time.
Can you tell us about your new application?
The app is designed to be a comprehensive support tool for middle-aged men. It offers customized exercise programs, including chair-based and mindfulness exercises, making it accessible to men of varying fitness levels. One of the app’s standout features is the community aspect — it allows users to connect, share experiences, and motivate each other. We also provide tracking tools so users can monitor their progress, which helps reinforce positive behavior and keeps them on track toward their health goals. It’s all about providing the right tools and support to make health improvement achievable and enjoyable.
What are some common mistakes middle-aged men make when trying to get healthier?
One of the most common mistakes is trying to do too much too soon — overindulging during the holidays and then switching to extreme diets or intense exercise programs in January. This yo-yo approach is not only unsustainable but can also harm the body by disrupting hormonal balance. Another mistake is neglecting mental health and stress management. True health is holistic — it’s about balancing physical activity, proper nutrition, and mental well-being. I always encourage my clients to start with small, achievable goals and build from there, ensuring long-term success without burnout.
How do chair-based exercises help people with limited mobility?
Chair-based exercises are a fantastic option for men who are recovering from injury, dealing with mobility issues, or just starting their fitness journey. These exercises help improve strength, flexibility, and circulation without placing too much strain on the joints. They’re also great for men who may feel intimidated by more traditional forms of exercise. Over time, many of these men gain the confidence and strength to transition to standing or more advanced exercises. What’s important is that they’re able to get moving in a way that feels safe and manageable for them.
What inspired you to develop a masterclass?
The idea for the masterclass came from conversations with men who wanted practical, actionable advice without feeling overwhelmed. Many of them didn’t need a full fitness overhaul — they just wanted to know how to make small, impactful changes. The masterclass focuses on key areas like heart health, stress management, and building strength, breaking them down into easy-to-understand steps. It’s all about simplifying the process and giving participants tools they can implement right away. The response has been incredibly positive, and I’m excited to continue offering it.
